The HEAL Project: Farm Assistant

The HEAL Project is seeking a part-time Farm Assistant to work under the Farm Manager for a full growing season, engaging in various tasks such as plant propagation, sowing, irrigation maintenance, mowing, and pest management. The role includes harvesting and preparing crops for sale at the farmers' market, which requires regular Saturday shifts. The assistant will learn essential farming and gardening skills on a small-scale diversified farm while maintaining a clean and safe environment and contributing to educational initiatives. Additionally, the assistant will lead community projects during monthly events, emphasizing the importance of curiosity, flexibility, and enthusiasm in this position.

The HEAL Project (THP) is a unique organization providing hands-on programming that instills healthy lifestyle habits in elementary school children while inspiring environmental and agricultural awareness through a comprehensive, interactive curriculum. THP teaches kids where their food comes from and why it matters.

Responsibilities

  • Plant propagation

  • Sowing/transplanting

  • Irrigation maintenance

  • Mowing

  • Pest management

  • Harvesting

  • Post-harvest handling (washing, packaging, and storage of crops)

  • Marketing a variety of crops

  • Learning Opportunities:

  • Basic systems and skills for row cropping on a small-scale diversified farm

  • Gardening and landscaping skills

  • Farmers Market Involvement:

  • Key role in harvesting and preparing crops for sale - Regular participation in staffing the farmers market on Saturdays (schedule determined at hire)

  • Additional Responsibilities:

    • Keep the farm and outdoor classroom clean and safe

    • Support development of educational infrastructure at the farm

    • Community Engagement: - Lead projects with volunteers and community members during: - Monthly Community Farm Days - Volunteer shifts - Special events

Basic Eligibility

  • Be legally allowed to work in the United States

  • Test negative for Tuberculosis

  • Posses a clean driving record

  • Pass fingerprinting & DOJ background check to work with children

  • Enthusiasm for leading groups of children, youth and adults

  • Good attitudes and enthusiasm are valued over experience! No formal farming experience is required for this role

Typical Mental & Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged physical activity with bending, crouching, lifting and stretching 

  • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate garden tools and office equipment such as a keyboard, photocopier, etc. 

  • Range of hearing and eyesight which permits one to communicate with students and adults in an outdoor environment, as well as maintain data records 

  • Ability to walk up to two miles and lift and carry 40lbs for 20 feet

  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing environment

Compensation

  • $25.00/hour plus a weekly share of produce and flowers
