Community Events
The 2025 Left Coast Annual Exhibition at Sanchez Art Center, running from April 11 to May 11, features over 50 selected artworks by various artists from Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington, chosen by juror Carin Adams. This year's theme emphasizes the diverse stories and practices of artists, showcasing a range of media and styles. Highlights include Michele Foyer's reflective sculpture, Erin Grant's exploration of biological boundaries, and Vicky Knoop's commentary on memory fragility. Additionally, the exhibition will host a virtual talk on April 27, and the East Gallery will present the award-winning works of Kimiko Kogure, whose silk creations reflect personal history, and Kayley Jane Dykman, who honors Pacific Islander heritage through her representational oil paintings.
The webinar "Staying Inside the 501(c)(3) Lines: Keeping Nonpartisan in Messy Partisan Times," scheduled for April 23 at 2pm ET, aims to equip nonprofits with the knowledge to effectively engage voters while adhering to nonpartisan requirements necessary for maintaining 501(c)(3) status. Led by attorney Stephanie Robbins from Harmon, Curran, Spielberg & Eisenberg, LLP, the session will clarify IRS regulations and outline strategies for nonprofits to maximize their voter engagement efforts. Participants will gain insights into the “dos” and “don'ts” of nonpartisan activities and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Join The Parent Venture, an essential webinar led by mental health expert Dr. Earl Turner, designed to equip parents and caregivers with tools to help children cope with racial stress and build resilience in the face of discrimination. Dr. Turner, a licensed psychologist and professor, will address the challenges Black families face regarding racial aggression and discrimination, offering strategies to foster pride and empowerment in children. The event welcomes parents, educators, and community members, with free admission and simultaneous Spanish interpretation available.
Redwood City Together invites the community to its 9th Annual World Café event, where attendees can hear inspiring stories from local residents and leaders, enjoy moving performances, and engage in a powerful community dialogue that celebrates immigrant journeys and communities. This event provides an opportunity for participants to learn from impactful community members, share their perspectives, and enjoy a free dinner. Interpretation services will be available for Spanish speakers, and the event will also offer dinner and free childcare.
Join The Parent Venture for the Neurodiversity Education Series, which provides support for families with neurodivergent learners through insights from experts in education, mental health, and advocacy. The upcoming event focuses on creating safe and inclusive communities for neurodivergent, gender expansive, and non-binary youth, tackling important issues such as bullying and mental health challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. Led by Anthony Ross, LMFT, and Emily Swanson, LMFT, this discussion will offer valuable guidance on how to engage with neurodivergent children about gender and sexuality.
Acterra is offering a free online Teacher Training Workshop designed to equip educators with tools to teach students about climate change, renewable energy, and Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). The workshop will cover essential topics such as greenhouse gases, the carbon cycle, human impact on climate change, and the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy sources, along with ZEV technology. The goal is to empower educators to encourage students to make sustainable choices and consider ZEVs as their first cars.
Join Peninsula Family Service for a Youth Financial Workshop Series designed to empower teens aged 13-20 to navigate the complex financial landscape of adulthood. This 6-week workshop series will be held on Thursdays and aims to equip participants with the necessary tools and resources to thrive, take on financial challenges, gain independence, learn responsibility, prepare for emergencies, manage credit, develop life skills, and reduce stress.

This inspiring event will showcase the impressive achievements of YCS youth-led community service projects over the past year. The Shared Prosperity Coordinating Council (SPCC) and the County of San Mateo Office of Racial and Social Justice are hosting a virtual workshop. This workshop aims to improve economic mobility in San Mateo County through a data-driven and community-centered framework. Participants will be introduced to a proposed framework for understanding economic challenges, explore data utilization for supporting impacted communities, discuss strategies for overcoming barriers to shared prosperity, and engage in real-time feedback. Registration is required to receive the meeting link, and there will also be smaller community conversations to gather direct feedback from residents.
Acterra, in partnership with Cameo Network and Cook Alliance, is hosting a free online MEHKO 101 webinar on April 30 at 6 PM PDT for aspiring entrepreneurs interested in starting a Micro-Enterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO). COMMUNITY Announcements
The San Bruno Community Foundation's Community Grants Fund is now open for its ninth annual cycle. Local community organizations can apply for grants of up to $25,000 to support programs benefiting the San Bruno community. Thanks to the support of YouTube and Google.org, the Foundation is set to award a total of $300,000 in grants by the end of 2024. The decisions on grant awards are based on several factors, including the proposed program's benefits to the San Bruno community, alignment with the Foundation's focus areas, program methodology and budget, requested grant amount in relation to the expected community benefit, as well as the organization's track record, stability, and financial health.
The Community Foundation of San Carlos' Fall 2024 grant cycle is now open. All applications must be submitted by 4:00 pm on Friday, September 13, 2024, to be considered. The Community Foundation of San Carlos will consider requests from 501(c)(3) nonprofits that serve community members who live, work, learn, or play in San Carlos. Only nonprofits whose operating expenses were less than $1.5 million for the most recently completed fiscal year are eligible to apply.
The California State Nonprofit Security Grant Program (CSNSGP) aims to provide funding support for target hardening and other physical security enhancements to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk for violent attacks and hate crimes due to ideology, beliefs, or mission. Eligible organizations must be California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits. The grant period is from December 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026, with a submission deadline of September 23, 2024. The available funding is $76,000,000, and nonprofits can request up to $250,000 per location for a total of $500,000.
The Peninsula Health Care District is hosting an informational session for the 2025 Community Grants. If your organization is a 501(c)(3) non-profit or a public agency serving residents in parts of South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, and Foster City, are invited to join the session on Zoom. At the session, attendees will learn about the upcoming 2025 Community Grants cycle, including the focus areas, application process, deadlines, and review criteria. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, and public entities for their Emergency and Disaster Relief Fund. This fund is designed to provide critical resources during disasters that affect our region, including fires, droughts, earthquakes, flooding, and unforeseen emergency events that may afflict local residents and communities.

Each year, the Coastal Conservancy issues millions of dollars in grants for projects that restore and protect the California coast, expand public access to it, and enhance its resilience to climate change. The State of California has made an unprecedented investment in the resilience and accessibility of the coast. As a result, the Coastal Conservancy has significant funding available to:
nonprofit organizations,
public agencies, and
federally-recognized tribes
for projects that benefit public access, natural resources, working lands, and climate resiliency at the coast, coastal watersheds, and the San Francisco Bay.
Housing Industry Foundation (HIF) distributes 500 emergency housing grants every year to individuals and families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties so they can remain securely housed. These grants of up to $2,500 bridge the gap between crisis and stability to help pay rent, security deposits, and utility bills.
