Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition: Campaign Manager

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is seeking a Campaign Manager to lead initiatives aimed at promoting cycling and improving bike infrastructure in the region. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills, a passion for sustainable transportation, and experience in campaign management. This role involves coordinating with community members, stakeholders, and local government to drive impactful programs and advocacy efforts.

About Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition:

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization founded in 1993 that seeks to build healthy and just communities. They are proud of the extraordinary impact they have had over the past 30 years in improving local infrastructure and normalizing bicycling for transportation in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Additionally, they are excited about the potential to address challenging local and global issues through the humble bicycle. SVBC stands among peer organizations in the nine Bay Area counties as one of the largest bike coalitions in North America. Their strategic plan provides further insight into SVBC’s vision, strategy, and priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the policy director and advocacy team in leading and managing our campaigns, projects, and volunteer network, including but not limited to:

    • El Camino Real complete communities campaign

    • Vision Zero Campaign

    • Bay Wheels bike share expansion

    • Equity projects in South San Francisco, East Palo Alto, and East San Jose.

    • SVBC Local Teams

  • Develop, lead, and support volunteer-powered campaigns.

  • Facilitate and lead volunteer meetings, training, and other activities.

  • Organize on-street grassroots campaigns and outreach with volunteers, municipalities, transportation agencies, and elected officials.

  • Play a key role in organizing our annual Silicon Valley Bike Summit.

  • Provide support for SVBC’s signature events:

    • Bike Month

    • Bike to the Future

    • Member Party

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public policy, urban planning, political science, public health, or related field, OR at least 3 years of full-time-equivalent hands-on campaign management experience.

  • Must have a deep passion for bicycling and growing an inclusive bike movement.

  • Well-versed in transportation and housing policy issues within the context of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.

  • The ability to build and maintain good relationships with municipal staff, transportation agencies, and elected officials, and an understanding of diplomacy.

  • Ability to organize events and represent SVBC’s policy agenda in diverse settings, including at government hearings, roundtables, working groups, conferences, and with media.

  • Seasoned public speaker with experience presenting at neighborhood meetings, business associations, community-based organizations, and city council meetings.

  • Ability to develop and execute successful advocacy campaigns.

  • Experienced community organizer adept at building power in working-class communities: coalition-building, power mapping, and campaign strategy to achieve meaningful victories.

  • Proven ability to recruit, manage, and organize volunteers while effectively aligning their interests with the strategic priorities and constraints of a non-profit organization.

  • Skilled at analyzing policy and translating complex information into clear action alerts and talking points for volunteer advocates.

  • Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative research skills. 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with experience producing high-quality policy analysis and recommendations through blogs, policy briefs, and reports for a non-technical audience.

  • Excellent project management abilities, setting and meeting deadlines effectively.

  • Adept at meeting facilitation and building consensus across a wide range of stakeholders, including government, community, academia, and corporate partners.

  • Self-starter with the ability to inspire others to action. 

  • Experience working with local jurisdictions and navigating public outreach projects or campaigns.

  • Ability to work well in a team, facilitate meetings, and maintain positive working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Additional desired qualifications:

    • Experience with grant writing, securing sponsorships, and/or partnership development.

    • Connections within San Mateo and Santa Clara counties that include other policy advocacy organizations, city and elected officials, transportation agencies, academia, the tech sector, and/or other policy professionals. 

    • Fluent in Spanish or another language spoken in one of our equity priority areas.

    • Demonstrated resilience and problem-solving skills to navigate non-profit transitions and organizational change. 

Compensation

  • Annual salary starts at $75,000 and more depending on experience in the field. Full-time, exempt position with a competitive benefits package including PTO, health, dental, and vision insurance, and 401k with employer match.
