Human Investment Project (HIP): Accounting Manager

HIP Housing, a dynamic nonprofit organization, is seeking a skilled and proactive Accounting Manager to join their team. This pivotal role will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of the accounting systems, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities will include managing the monthly close process, managing the company-wide account reconciliation process, analyzing financial trends, and pinpointing opportunities for cost reduction. As a leader on the accounting team, the candidate will ensure the organization's financial operations and support long-term sustainability, transparency, and accountability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar discipline required

  • 7 + years of accounting experience and at least 2+ years of senior accounting experience or supervisory experience

  • CPA certification is a plus!

  • Track record of coaching peers and direct reports on accounting projects

  • Understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Experience with external audit

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Leadership

    • Oversee the work of the property and corporate accounting team through strong delegation, leadership, and review.

    • Supervise 2-3 senior and staff accountants.

    • Train and supervise staff, including assigning and reviewing work, coordinating staff activities, allocating personnel, and reviewing performance.

    • Develop, lead, recommend, and implement recommendations for effective and efficient business processes.

    • Lead and participate in cross-team collaborations and trainings.

    • Develop and implement internal controls, policies, and procedures that improve efficiency within the Finance Department.

    • Manage and coordinate the monthly close process across the organization

  • Financials Statement Analysis, Reporting and Oversight

    • Work independently to analyze, investigate, and explain budget variances.

    • Interpret and ensure compliance with legal documents such as loan agreements, regulatory agreements, developer services agreements, grants, and donation agreements.

    • Assists in the annual audit process for HIP Housing and its affiliates.

    • Prepare and submit detailed audit schedules and packages for audited corporate entities and properties.

    • Develop and submit ad hoc reports as requested.

    • Perform various projects and analyses as required.

    • Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, trial balances, and cash flow statements.

    • Monitor cash flow projections.

    • Manage the annual budget process for HIP Housing and all its affiliates, including third-party properties.

  • Account Reconciliation

    • Oversee all bank account reconciliations on a monthly basis.

    • Review and approve necessary journal entries for posting.

    • Oversee and reconcile intercompany reconciliation general ledgers.

    • Ensure internal year-end financial statements agree with the annual audit.

  • Communication

    • Collaborate and interface with various departments, such as property management, fund development, and programs, to support the business's operating needs.

    • Provide training on various topics for Corporate and Property Accounting teams.

    • Provide training to all staff on new accounting processes and procedures.

    • Collaborate with the Programs and Fund Development teams on grant applications, reporting, billing, and compliance requirements.

COmpensation and Benefits

  • Full-time, exempt, at-will, annually reviewed position

  • Annual salary is $100,000-$115,000
