CASA of San Mateo: Development Director

CASA of San Mateo is looking for a Development Director who is a highly effective and strategic storyteller, relationship builder, ambassador, and fundraiser. The individual in this outward-facing role will utilize strong presentation and communication skills to cultivate, engage, and steward potential and existing donors, inspiring them to support CASA of San Mateo County's mission and the children it serves. This position is ideal for a proactive leader and creative problem solver with proven fundraising experience who will conduct targeted outreach, build a robust pipeline of individual and institutional funders, and lead efforts to meet fundraising goals associated with all elements of CASA's fundraising program. This includes grant writing, direct mail campaigns, major donor engagement, fundraising events, marketing efforts, and community outreach.

About CASA

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo County recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work one-on-one with children and youth in the San Mateo County foster care and juvenile justice systems. CASA volunteers form trusted relationships with young people, acting as a mentor and advocate for youth in court and in the larger community.  By being a consistent adult presence in a young person’s life amidst changing homes, caretakers, social workers and other professionals, our volunteers provide hope and healing to children who are navigating traumatic circumstances.

Qualifications

  • A leader with 4+ years of proven success in fundraising, including securing major gifts from individual and institutional donors

  • Experience writing and managing grants, including crafting strong projects, working with finance staff, reporting on impact data, and liaising with program officers strongly preferred

  • Experience managing a team and strong commitment to team-building and coaching developing staff

  • Committed to CASA of San Mateo County’s mission with ability to articulately and passionately communicate CASA’s mission, programs and accomplishments

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills guided by cultural competence to work with diverse constituencies

  • Excellent time management, organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) software, preferably Donor Perfect

  • Excellent written and oral/public speaking communication skills

  • Flexible and willing to work some weekends and evenings to meet partnership and donor needs and to attend and/or assist with organization events

  • Access to reliable transportation.  Willing and able to travel throughout San Mateo County and, occasionally throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy

    • Develop, implement and diversify the strategic fundraising of the organization to build, sustain and increase financial support in alignment with CASA’s mission and goals.

    • Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team and participates in Board meetings with shared responsibility for achieving the organization’s goals and vision

    • Secure funding to sustain and expand CASA of San Mateo County’s impact

    • Research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors and sponsors to maintain and grow new and existing revenue sources

    • Work with Executive Director, Board of Directors, and members of larger staff to identify and build relationships with individuals and institutions (foundations, government, nonprofit, and corporate) to support CASA’s sustainability, strategic growth and meet fundraising goals

    • In partnership with the Executive Director, develop annual fundraising goals. Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive annual fundraising plan to achieve fundraising goals

    • Work closely with finance team to develop and track revenue projections for the annual budgeting process, reconcile systems and prepare reports for the Executive Director and Board.

    • Develop and conduct presentations to stakeholders, partners, and potential funders, including presentations at site visits and organization events and activities, as needed

    • Work with communications staff to build a communications strategy (including social media, newsletters, promotional materials and annual report) towards informing supporters and raising CASA’s profile with donors.

  • Individual Donors

    • Support the Executive Director in her fundraising solicitations and activities

    • Manage and solicit a portfolio of individual donors, including prospecting new donors, preparing staff for funder meetings and stewarding current relationships

    • Oversee the creation of effective donor and prospect communication content, donor appeals, event collateral, strategy and calendar

    • Support the involvement of CASA’s board as active partners in the fundraising process and provide leadership for the Board’s Fund Development Committee

    • Oversee the planning and execution of all aspects of fundraising events

    • Build and maintain relationships with volunteer fundraisers, including the Host Committee for CASA’s annual fundraiser

    • Coordinate and host donor visits at CASA events

    • Ensure that gifts are acknowledged in a prompt and appropriate manner

    • Ensure that contributions and donor data are properly maintained in CASA’s donor database, including regular reconciliation of contributions with CASA’s finance team.  CASA currently uses DonorPerfect as its donor database.

    • Ensure acknowledgement of funder contributions in an appropriate and timely manner and consistent with level and purpose of gift

  • Institutional Donors/Grants Management

    • Work with Finance and Operations Director and Grants and Impact Manager to ensure grant spend down, develop grant proposals and budgets, and ensure compliance

    • Oversee and direct staff on creating proposals and reporting impact metrics for external funders

    • Manage relationships with institutional funders, such as meeting with program officers

    • Ensure the maintenance and management of a detailed calendar of preparation and deadline submission dates for grant proposals and reports

    • Lead and partner with the Grants and Impact Manager and Executive Director to identify, cultivate and solicit foundation, government and corporate donors

    Management/Administration

    • Manage the Development Team which includes a Development and Communication Manager, Grants and Impacts Manager, as well as any additional development contractors or staff

    • Act as primary staff liaison to Board of Directors Fund Development Committee, supporting committee chair and members with developing meeting agendas and conducting meetings

    • Provide training, support, and materials for Board members’ fundraising activities

    • Ensure effective data tracking and accurate donor information. Current systems in use at CASA include Donor Perfect, Greater Giving, Benevity and CASA Manager

    • Ensure accurate and up-to-date donor recognition and acknowledgement in print and online

    • Ensure that development-related areas of CASA’s website and social media platforms are accurate, well written and current

    • Participate in and support CASA events, as needed

    • Collaborate with volunteers, as needed, and other staff, including development team members, the Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator, and Executive Director to create, coordinate and/or produce materials and activities to increase CASA of San Mateo County’s visibility in the community

    • Act as media and community spokesperson for the organization, as delegated by the Executive Director on an as needed basis

    • Other duties as needed 

COmpensation and Benefits

  • Starting salary range: $110,000 - $120,000

  • 160 hours of PTO with annual increases and 13 paid holidays and an organizational closure from Christmas Eve through New Years Day
