Pesticide Action & Agroecology Nework (PAN): Director of Finance and Operations

Pesticide Action & Agroecology Network (PAN) is looking for an experienced finance and operations leader to join its administrative team in Berkeley, California. This role, reporting to the Executive Director, involves overseeing financial management, budgeting, grant proposal financial reporting, accounting, and operational activities, including contract oversight and organizational filings. The position offers hybrid work flexibility and full benefits for the successful candidate based in the Bay Area.

About Pesticide Action & Agroecology Nework (PAN)

PAN’s mission is to eliminate the use of hazardous pesticides and promote health, resilience, and justice in food and farming. For 40 years, it has collaborated with various partners to advocate for transformative changes in the food system at multiple levels. Working closely with communities affected by industrial agriculture, PAN North America functions as one of five international centers, connecting local and global groups focused on consumer rights, labor issues, health, environmental concerns, and agriculture. Together, they aim to combat the spread of pesticides, promote sustainable alternatives, uphold health and environmental rights, and facilitate the transition to a fair and sustainable food system.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate financial management concepts to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Budgeting and forecasting experience.

  • Experience generating financial reports and analyzing and interpreting data.

  • Proficient with MS Excel and Salesforce

  • Experience in MIP accounting is preferred, but not required.

  • Experience in leading nonprofit operations and administration.

  • Be willing to learn and use: Google Workspace, Smartsheet, Slack, Zoom

  • Interest in, understanding of, and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of PAN.

Responsibilities

Financial Leadership (60%)

  • Financial oversight and strategic direction: Maintain up to date budgets, financial reports, monitor spending, and provide budgeting guidance. Support multi-year future forecasting and scenario planning. Support ease of program budgeting and assist with budget alignment and revisions.

  • Grant Management: Project-based budgeting, grant budget proposals and financial reporting for grant awards. Accurate release and tracking of restricted funds.

  • Audit and Financial Reporting: Oversee audits and 990 filings, manage financial statements.

  • Fiscal Sponsorees: Oversight of financial accounting and budgeting support for PAN’s fiscal sponsorees.

  • Collaboration: Work in collaboration with the fundraising, administration, and program teams.

  • Compliance and Standards: Process and approve financial and contractual agreements and reporting using best practices including internal controls and risk management.

Operations and Administration (35%)

  • Operational Sustainability: Develop and implement processes that maintain the operational functioning of the organization, in compliance with relevant laws, including organizational registrations, state filings and legal compliance.

  • Fiscally Sponsored Projects: Positively collaborate with fiscally sponsored organizations to assist with administrative needs.

  • Negotiate and oversee office lease and office moves as needed by the organization.

  • Maintain utilities and subscriptions needed for the functioning of the organization.

  • Performance Management: Work in alignment with Strategic Plan.

  • Supervision: Supervise the Staff Accountant, Office Administrator and IT Consultant.

  • Employee Relations: Ensure equity, diversity and inclusion principles are followed in all aspects of the operations and financial management of the organization.

  • Risk Management: Monitor and keep up-to-date with federal and state laws, including compliance with several state laws related to 501(c)(3) operations.

Other Responsibilities (5%)

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

COmpensation and Benefits

  • $67,500 annually at .75 FTE annually (Full time equivalent $90,000)
