Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside: Executive Director

The Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside is seeking an Executive Director who will report to the Board of Directors and lead a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to serving the youth of the Coastside. The ideal candidate is a passionate and strategic leader with a strong ethical foundation, capable of balancing operational management with community engagement. This role involves building relationships with staff, supporters, and local stakeholders, including government officials and nonprofit leaders, while directly supervising key personnel such as the Program Director, Operations Director, Accounting Manager, and Office Coordinator.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside (BGCC) is a nonprofit organization serving Half Moon Bay and the surrounding communities. Its mission is to enable all Coastside youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. BGCC provides a safe, supportive environment where youth can grow, learn, and thrive. The Club offers a variety of programs and services that promote academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character development for youth aged 6 to 18. Key Boys and Girls Club program areas include Academic Support, Skills Development and Community Engagement, Sports and Fitness, Safety and Emotional Wellness, and Sports and Community Facilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent experience.

  • Enthusiasm for the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside.

  • Commitment to safety for all youth, staff, and volunteers in all programs and spaces at all times.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan, and coordinate operations in a multi-unit organization.

  • Leadership skills, including negotiation, problem solving, decision making, strategic thinking, accountability, and delegation.

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written; ability to speak effectively and persuasively to groups and individuals.

  • Demonstrated competency and ability in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a Board of Directors, staff, community groups, and other related agencies.

  • Knowledge and expertise in asset management including financial resources and property.

  • Proved success in various resource development activities and knowledge of diverse sources of funding for nonprofits.

  • Demonstrated skills and competency in the following areas preferred: 

    • principles and practices of non-profit organizations

    • business management

  • Commitment to ethical and honest practice and behavior that reflect and enhance the integrity of BGCC.

  • Fundamental understanding of the significance of small community dynamics. Familiarity with the Coastside community and its specific relationships, history, and nuance is a plus.

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English is preferred.

Responsibilies

  • Executive leadership: 50% 

    Day-to-day leadership of operations

    • Provide leadership and accountability for staff, volunteers, and contractors, ensuring effective daily operations.

    • Foster a culture of safety, innovation, teamwork, collaboration, and excellence.

    • Act as liaison with the Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA), ensuring seamless communication and compliance with national policies and standards.

    • Act as liaison to and with the Board, staff, Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD), Cunha Athletic Boosters, and other community partners. 

    • Oversee development, execution, and evaluation of BGCC programs, ensuring alignment with mission and community needs

    • Oversee BGCC facilities, partnerships and management, maximizing impact and operational efficiency and fostering strong community partnerships.

    Strategic management

    • Support and guide the Board in developing and maintaining a practical and actionable five-year strategic plan, ensuring initiatives are achievable and mission-driven.

    Finance

    • Lead the creation and oversight of the annual budget, review monthly financial reports, and work with the Board treasurer and finance staff on presentations to the Finance Committee and the full Board.

    • Manage expenses to stay within the approved annual budget, reporting on variances as indicated.

    • Work closely with the Board treasurer, finance staff and Board chair to develop and maintain the complementing financial budget to the five-year strategic plan.

    • Collaborate with program staff to ensure all deliverables from grant funds are met and reports are submitted in a timely manner.

    Marketing and communications

    • Collaborate with the marketing staff and Board Marketing Committee on branding, advertising, promotions, and communications. 

    • Review and approve key external messages to ensure that they maintain BGCC brand identity.

    Human resources 

    • Take direct responsibility for human resource actions through recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, training, professional development, and performance evaluation. 

    • Consult with the Board Chair and Executive Committee to consider the creation of key new positions.  

    Board development and governance work

    • Work with the Board Governance Committee and Board Executive Committee to support the nominations and onboarding of new Board members, ensure a successful transition of officers, and ensure compliance with all facets of good governance, including annual paperwork (e.g., Board evaluation, conflict of interest statement, background checks).  

    • Work with the Board chair to develop meeting agendas and distribute and retain materials.

    Fundraising: 30%

    Oversee and manage, with the help of committees and contractors, all fund development activities.  Ensure annual budget is funded and organization has adequate cash flow.

    Donors

    • Strengthen and expand relationships with key donors, foundations, and sponsors to ensure sustainable funding.

    • Maintain the donor database, updating regularly.

    Grants

    • Collaborate with the grant contractor and Board Fundraising Committee to secure and maintain grant funding.

    • Provide direction to the grant application contractor and Fundraising Committee to ensure budgeted grant fundraising targets are met.

    Events

    • Lead planning and execution of major fundraising events, maximizing impact, and leveraging volunteer and committee support.

      • Pumpkin Festival

    • Support the Gala Committee to design and deliver an Annual Gala which showcases the Club and through sponsorships, donations, auction, ticket sales and other activities is a significant fundraising activity for BGCC.

    Diverse revenue streams

    • With Board, staff, and contractors, evaluate other revenue sources and help implement activities that bring revenue to the Club. Current efforts include:

      • Facilities rentals 

      • Camps

      • Clinics

      • Wizards game

    Community/Public relations: 20%

    Serve as the public face of BGCC, actively participating in community events and local partnerships to build visibility.

    • Implement targeted activities to increase community visibility of BGCC programs, fostering collaboration and engagement.

    • As able and appropriate, participate in Chamber of Commerce, City Council, and CUSD meetings, as well as other community activities, deemed important or necessary.

    • Liaison with Coastside News, KHMB, CoastsideBuzz.com, and other media organizations.

    • Develop and raise community awareness of BGCC by implementing activities for:

      • 4th of July Parade

      • Pumpkin Festival

      • Night of Lights

      • Other community activities

    • Liaison with the Emeritus Board, community leaders, parents, staff, volunteers, donors, foundations.

COmpensation and Benefits

  • Salary range is $105K to $130K/year and is dependent upon skill and experience.  Employee is eligible for full individual health care, SIMPLE IRA with BGCC matching, generous PTO, and other benefits.
