MEETING RECAP
During our recent "Rethinking the Way We Move: Active Transportation for Wellness, Community, and the Planet" event, we had the privilege of hosting informative presentations from Carlos Moreno, Peninsula Clean Energy, Program Specialist, Vanessa Castro, Office of Sustainability Active Transportation Specialist, and Anthony Montes, Silicon Valley Bike Coalition, Community Organizer.
Carlos shared his personal experience transitioning from a car to an e-bike, while emphasizing Peninsula Clean Energy's (PCE) commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He discussed PCE's rebate program for used electric vehicles, with San Mateo County residents eligible for rebates up to $1,000, and income-qualifying individuals eligible for additional rebates up to $4,000. Carlos also highlighted the accessibility of PCE's e-bike program, which provides rebates up to $1,000 or 80% of the bike's price.
Vanessa Castro from the Office of Sustainability for San Mateo County discussed the importance of advocating for affordable and accessible housing and transportation. She highlighted the Unincorporated San Mateo County Active Transportation Plan (SMC ATP), which aims to develop safe and connected walking and biking networks. Vanessa emphasized the goals of the SMC ATP, including safety improvements, equitable access, and increased active transportation usage.
Anthony Montes from the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (SVBC) presented SVBC's mission and three strategies for active transportation advocacy. He discussed SVBC's programs, the Power Pedal initiative for safer communities, and the People-Centered Communities strategy focused on partnerships for effective public transit and affordable housing. Anthony emphasized the need to create a network of safe east-west and north-south bicycle routes, focusing on El Camino Real.
Overall, the presentations provided valuable insights and opportunities to promote sustainable transportation options, enhance safety, and build people-centered communities.
