Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC): Innovations for a Low Carbon Food System

Over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions come from our food systems today. Thus, it's urgent we reduce GHG emissions associated with what we are eating now. Join Sustainable San Mateo County and guest speaker Jill Kauffman Johnson to learn where the biggest emissions happen and what can be done to reduce them. Jill Kauffman Johnson will then focus on the role of microorganisms, like microalgae, yeast and bacteria, in helping create a low carbon food system. For example, microalgae are the Earth’s original oil producer and the most efficient organism on the planet to produce high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, and oils. As we seek more nutritious and delicious foods that require less resources to grow, the power of microorganisms may turn out to be a key solution.
