Kids In and Out of School This Fall: Discuss Pandemic Recovery Plans with SMC Superintendent of Schools Nancy Magee

Join Thrive Alliance, 4Cs, and County Superintendent Nancy Magee for a Community Forum to discuss the Pandemic Recovery Plan for the reopening of schools, the comprehensive framework that will be put in place to help local districts start classes again in the safest fashion possible, and the impact that this will have on childcare and after school providers. 

After the Superintendent’s presentation, we will hear from out-of-school-time providers, including Evan Jones of the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, Karen Haas-Foletta of Footsteps Child Care Inc. and Karen Molinari of Healthy Cities Tutoring, to dive deeper into the implications on operations. This session will be moderated by Rod Hsiao, Trustee of the San Mateo County Board of Education.

The briefing and discussion will take place on Friday, June 12 from 10:30- 11:30 am, with an opportunity for further informal discussion and networking until 12 pm.

San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools Nancy Magee

Nancy Magee is the San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools. Elected in 2018, Superintendent Magee brings more than 20 years of classroom experience and 11 years of district and county office of education leadership experience to the role. She currently serves on the First 5 San Mateo County Commission, the Housing Endowment and Regional Trust of San Mateo County Board, the Home for All – San Mateo County steering committee, and The Big Lift leadership team, and is Co-Chair of the San Mateo County Child Care Partnership Council. She holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from San Diego State University.

Rod Hsiao, Trustee, San Mateo County Board of Education

Rod Hsiao is the Founder and CEO of InPlay, a non-profit whose mission is to connect kids and youth to summer and after-school programs that ignite their individual interests and talents, thereby reducing the achievement gap. Through-out his career, he has sought to build vibrant, sustainable communities through public-private partnerships. He has worked in economic development research at Harvard and Yale and served as a senior legislative advisor in the U.S. Congress on international development and domestic policies. Subsequently he worked in management consulting before following his interest in education, where he has served as a senior manager of educational nonprofits and as an elected Trustee to the San Mateo County Board of Education. He has a B.A. in Economics from Oberlin College and a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Evan Jones, Executive Director of the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club

Evan Jones has been the Executive Director of the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club in San Mateo County, since January of 2014. Evan came to the club from Georgetown Law School where he worked on the Georgetown Law Journal’s Review of Criminal Procedure, as a legal intern for the honorable Robert E. Morin of the D.C. Superior Court, and as a summer legal fellow for the International Litigation practice of Earth Justice. Evan holds an A.B. in History from Dartmouth College with a minor in Government.

Karen Haas-Foletta, Founding Executive Director of Footsteps Child Care

Karen Haas-Foletta is the Executive Director of the non-profit, Footsteps Child Care. Karen founded Footsteps in 1994, and the organization has grown to serve over 700 children daily, infants through middle school, at eight locations in Belmont and Redwood City and one soon to open in San Mateo. She supervises 85 staff members. Karen has been a child care professional for more than 40 years, and is the author of a nationally recognized book, School-Age Ideas and Activities for After-School Programs. Karen is a consultant and presenter, both in California and nationally, and is an endorsed trainer for the California School-Age Consortium (CalSAC). She sits on the Board of Directors for the Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County. She was an advisory committee member for Get Healthy San Mateo County for five years. She is a member of the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District School Wellness Committee and also a voting member of San Mateo Child Care Partnership Council where she site on the Workforce Development Committee. Karen is a member of the Rotary Club of Belmont and Redwood Shores, the National Afterschool Association (NAA) and Thrive. She holds a BA in Psychology from Pitzer College and two Teaching Credentials from Pacific Oaks College.

Karen Molinari, Executive Director of Healthy Cities Tutoring

Karen Molinari is a Bay Area native who joined Healthy Cities Tutoring as the Executive Director in September 2018. Healthy Cities Tutoring partners with local school districts to support students struggling in school by matching them with a volunteer tutor. Students and tutors meet in-person weekly before, during, or after-school on campus or at the public libraries. Healthy Cities Tutoring currently serves 500 students in 14 Redwood City and San Carlos schools and began piloting remote tutoring during the current shelter in place. Karen is an education advocate, having attended local schools and receiving her bachelor’s degree in Political Science/Public Administration from UC Davis. Her strong belief in public service led to a career as a legislative aide to a U.S. Congressman and a California State Assemblyman, before entering the consulting field working with federal, state, and local government agencies. Karen is an active community member having served on numerous boards, commissions, and nonprofit organizations for close to 30 years and understands the critical role they have in addressing community needs. As an alumnus of local public schools, and raised by a single mother, Karen is grateful to the teachers and mentors who made a difference in her life. Their belief in her, and encouragement at critical times, left a lasting impression and helped her grow into a confident, compassionate, and successful person. Karen is thrilled to continue the great work of Healthy Cities Tutoring and share this successful program with our neighboring communities and broaden our impact throughout the region.
